There's an entire genre of this called "historical fiction", OP.
Why is it that when somebody reads a book and posts about it, they have absolutely nothing to say.

I'm glad you liked it, anon; it's one of my favorites. You might enjoy some of Vollmann's books, which normally have a lot of historical elements.
