Literally 2666. This is not a meme, I'm sure it was a direct inspiration(unlisted because of extreme plot similarities).
Nic Pizzolatto was influenced (or blatantly stole from) Robert W. Chamber's "the king in yellow", Karl Edward Wagner (namely his short stories "sticks" and "the river of night's dream"), Laird Barron (who also combines pulp with horror), and Thomas Ligotti (some of Cohle's line are taken almost verbatim from his stuff)

I don't think I've read most of the books that are cited as influences on True Detective but I can at least vouch that The King in Yellow is pretty amazing.
