Fear of the unknown is one very minor subset of the human condition, focusing on it too hard as genre has done blurs the lines between concrete and human.

All in all what's there to be said about it that hasn't already been said. I find cosmic horror totally devoid of any kind of inspiration.

"A Colder War" by Charles Stross, from his collection "Toast" is pretty neat. the superpowers try to weaponize the Old Ones and things go badly.
