Don't write the religion as a sect or something, write it as a thing people believe in for a reason. Most religions in fiction come off as extremist (and not because extreme is more interesting) and this seems to be because authors dont understand the beauty of true faith, and only see religion as some kind of sickness. But maybe your setting is different with angels amd shiet. Just talking about the religious communities in books where they seem to have mass suicide practice twice a day and everyone seems much too compliant and happy to do it.
