It's a meme as much as install Gentoo is a meme, in that it is helpful but not for everyone. Generally, you start with the Greeks in academics, so it makes sense to start there outside of academics, especially considering most influences on Western culture and literature can be traced back to the Greeks. If you want to get serious in literature you would start at the beginning and work toward contemporary, just like one might do with an author's bibliography. This is a literature board, thus there are lots of readers that'd like to get serious in literature.

I would be so bold as to suggest that any book is fine to read before the Greeks, as long as you don't mind missing out on some subtle references, though it's nigh impossible to include yourself in everyone's joke at any given time. I would say if you're reading something, and you feel you're missing out, then do a bit of research. it is most likely that even if you had read the greeks prior to finding one of these references, you would still need to do a bit of research to fully understand what the author is alluding to. Hell, it may even turn out that the referenced research will allow you more insight than if you even bothered to read the Greeks in the first place.
