What'd you expect? its from the 1960s.
>>7939938
so you got what you expected?
>>7941809
Is it really that bad? I knew it was a meme book, but not to that degree.
>>7942447
Imagine pic related but stretched out into a book
>>7942631
He got my name and can't get a gf too, so I'll check it.
Is it good?
>>7942736
It's above average, I thought harshly of it at first, but it's one of those books that keeps you thinking about it even after you've finished, whether you liked it or not.
I skipped the footnotes as well, they're basically little tidbits of history written from the author's perspective that don't really add to the story.
>>7942490
I always imagine the author writing this and kissing his fingers calling himself genius.
>>7939830
>>7942814
I got him to sign my copy of Heart of Darkness
>>7943256
I think you should replace that last image with a man of russian descent simultaneously fucking a butterfly and an english dictionary. Thanks.
>>7942490
DUDE CONSUMERISM LMAO
>>7943294
It's kind of ironic how he pushes "geek culture" as a universal good that's in danger of becoming monetized by the evil corporation when he's shilling the same kind of pandering bullshit himself.

>>7942490
>I burned the midnight oil
>Did you know that Midnight Oil was an Australian band bla bla bla
What's the point of making a subtle reference when you're just going to explain it in the next fucking sentence?
>>7942820
pretty accurate
Anyone got an infinite jest one?
>>7943256
Why does she have dark hair?
>>7944766
Such a shame that you have to pay in order to read the doujins at Fakku.
>>7942820
Jules Verne is comfy to the extreme. I remember reading 20 000 leagues when I was 10. At one point Nemo asks one of the main characters "How well do you know your history of Spain?" I don't know if it translates well in english (and I am making a very personal lecture of the text) but "your" history of Spain was a kind of wonderful revolution for me. This Nemo man lived in a submarine and expected (french) people to know the history of Spain! Of course it was only extraordinary to a 10 year old french boy learning the basics of the basics of french history, but I think this intellectual interest that was showcased in this scene of the book was one of the things that kept me reading and got me interested in history and literature.
Five Weeks in a Balloon is still my favorite.
This is the only one I have laughed at. Send me some (you)s if you think you can top this:

I'll make you one

The laziest writing I've ever seen in my life
>hmm I don't really have a lot to write about
>I'll just fill it with a shit ton of 'nerdy' references and call it good
The sad thing is there are people who love this book
The thinking process behind it must be something like "wow I get this reference therefor it's good". When they see a reference they know, dopamine just starts firing in their brains.
It's like Where's Waldo for pseudo intellectual self proclaimed nerds
>>7942490
Gaddis does the same exact shit in The Recognitions except with 'good' art yet you idiots never say anything bad about it

that's just a painting by Balthus, who often did painting about little girls in lewd poses or situations.
>>7946988
But anti-Stalinism, though.
>>7947565
It's a satire of Stalinism so I think it's justifiable to have Stalin in the got section. Sanders though...
>>7947576
Yup. That was me as well, and very likely everybody who's picked up that book for the past couple decades.
>>7944766
the 'what I got' section applies to all murakami novels

How fucking ignorant would you have to be to not know what Animal Farm's about? It's not exactly a big twist, or a secret.
>>7948176
every time
>>7942490
This has copypasta potential
The book must be a post-ironic masterpiece
>>7948212
A lot of people really don't realize that Orwell is actually a socialist too. High schools usually ignore that part when they teach the book.
>>7942490
I cant tell if this is sincere or not. As it continues to go on and on, it reminds me of the way I used to write when I was 11.
>>7945927
same with Proust. I don't think you get the point though

Sick, now I really want to check it out.

Do it. The books actually deliver and are quite a fun read.

Will do. Thanks anon.

I expected/got the same, but I much prefer what I got.
Probably the best military sci-fi. Way better than that space opera bullshit.
>>7948802
Yep, it's about the Stalinist corruption of Socialism with Napoleon standing in for Stalin and Snowball as a legit socialist
fresh oc
OC from a really long time ago but never posted for some reason

That's the thing, there are some decent bits of worldbuilding in there, the main character lives in what is essentially a massive junkyard apparment complex made from RVs and there's some decent cyberpunk stuff going on that's just shoved aside to make room for
>DUDE WIL WHEATON IS PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNET LMAO!!1!11!!21111!!!!!!!!!11!!~

Gomenasai, my name is Ken-Sama.
I’m a 27 year old American Otaku (Anime fan for you gaijins). I draw Anime and Manga on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior Japanese games. (Disgaea, Final Fantasy, Persona series)
I train with my Katana every day, this superior weapon can cut clean through steel because it is folded over a thousand times, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my sword license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.
I speak Japanese fluently, both Kanji and the Osaka dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Japanese history and their bushido code, which I follow 100%
When I get my Japanese visa, I am moving to Tokyo to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Studio Ghibli or a game designer!
I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.
Wish me luck in Japan!

It's strange to me, how the crux of the problem presented in this picture, could be entirely cured by meditation. It is so easy, and within everyones grasp, but people will never do it, no matter how much pain they found themselves in
>>7947576
>le weed-man
>>7955719

>>7950875
You could also argue that Snowball is meant to be Trotsky (so yeah "legit socialist" is probably right). I get so fucking sick of people claiming it's meant to critique socialism as a whole.
>>7948802
Yep, Napoleon = Stalin and the P.O.U.M was eventually attacked (along with the anarchist CNT) by the Soviet-backed PCE (Spanish Communist Party).
>>7955899
Sure, call me an idiot, but I still know what the book's about. The footnotes were pointless (that is unless you enjoy Diaz breaking the flow of the story with his little interjections).

Welp gonna read it once I finish Stoner

>>7959022
Exhentai is my mainstay, it has the biggest catalog. Tsumino is the successor to Pururin, though nowhere near as big.
I'm not very good at this... Hope it's good enough to read the excerpt
>>7953053
You missed the whole point of it if that's what you got out of it, but then again that's expected from an idiot who thinks that cramming as many images as possible into these is funny.

This is like the most retarded way of wording it.

as well
>>7948814
lol
>>7961462
Not the point, "add to the story" is liking saying footnotes have a narrative function.

god I fucking hated that book

I have that painting in my room, it's right next to my banjo.
>>7962802
No way! I have that painting in my room too, and it's right next to my lion!
>>7962816
Were you trying to say something with your comment? The painting doesn't depict a banjo but I have a banjo mounted on the wall next to it.
>>7957879
The black stretch near the woman's arm in what you expected makes it look like it's trying to censor the lion's disjointed dick or something
>>7951682
That looks very good
>>7963034
That's pretty much the same though.

>>7939830
Made this fresh after I read Norris's Pit
>>7945927
Gaddis, Joyce etc. However they built an entire world from the stories and didn't solely rely on the references to push the plot forward. Ready Player One relies on its shitty overt references to lean to the reader and say "DID YA CATCH THAT ONE ROLF?! XDDDD"
>>7949184
Actually yes.
>>7945939
This is extremely accurate.

This is basically Mario Incandenza as a character so yeah
>>7963024
i like this, it's an actual expectation vs reality not really that much of a meme. I went in thinking it was about book burning.
>>7961949
That blog was the best part of the book doe.

>>7942490
>And, of course, Kevin Smith.
>>7959308
Your expectation sequence is the exact opposite of mine. I thought it was going to be a sort of tragic romance but the whole "love story" was just a front for the hollowness of the American dream.
Their love wasn't even really that genuine if you think about it. Can you name one thing Gatsby said he loved about Daisy aside from her beauty? All he says towards the end is that he loves how "her voice sounds like money." Demonstrating how Daisy is the final fashion accessory to make him feel like he's "in with the Old Money."
>>7969329
>can't into reading comprehension
I said you need you need to separate personal feelings as in opinions beliefs thoughts etc. "Feelings" wasn't the best word, but its meaning is obvious in the context of that dialogue.
>>7948777
I''ve read this book like twice now and i'm not seeing how it has anything to do with Dark Souls and Berserk

It's almost as though Diaz intended for the reader to be flickering back and forth between multiple streams of content. Of course, it's not as though anyone would do that on purpose. Good job deciphering the author's and editors' attempt to make you read more!
