I've heard from some anons that Delany is a crappy writer, but I've seen Dhalgren on some employee rec lists at Chapters, so I'm not sure. What do you think?

Also, I've never read any Poe before. I'm gonna go look up The Raven before reading that collection of his science fiction, but can you recommend any specific stories in that collection to read first?

Thanks.

I don't think Dune really belongs on that list. It might be entertaining, but it's fairly childishly written. For example, the protagonists are brave and smart and just and strong. The bad guys are fat, ugly pedophiles who can't support their own weight and backstab each other at any chance. Hebert is literally incapable of subtlety, and will beat you over the head with the idea of a sustainable planet. It is not a "deep" book

>>
>>7939116
I (>>7939231) would also add that I was fairly disappointed with Sound and the Fury but immensely enjoyed As I Lay Dying. AILD is not nearly as experimental, and I guess that's where the value of S&tF lies. I think my main problem with S&tF is that they used an appendix/epilogue from another edition as the Forward, which spoiled nearly the entire plot. Then you see the story out from four different perspectives, which would have been much more interesting to discover the story by piecing those perspectives together, rather then just recognizing the parts from the Forward.
Also disappointing was that I thought from the forward that the book would just be dripping in discomfort, and I was right. Except the discomfort was not from the themes, just from the tedium of reading in the idiosyncrasies of the perspectives.

Have you ever read Dick? Or specifically DADoES? I want SciFi but with literary merit.
>>
>>7939267
Literary Scfi for me means Stanislaw Lem. Solaris or The Fururologixal Congress are the only ones I've read, and recommend.

As for Dick, I've only read DADoES and was not as impressed. People are right when they list "DADoES/Blade Runner" as a film adaptation that's better than its source material. I can't comment on The Man in the High Castle or others by him

It's not exactly SciFi, but I'd recommend Calvino's Cosmicomics as well.

More literary than Dune but still not at the level of the classics you've listed is The Forever War. It's entertaining but still not exactly first rate.
