Though I still like her writing, I would say a lot of Virginia Woolf's stuff is like this. Of course, she's very often trying to convey the inexpressible parts of human consciousness, so this ambiguity is warranted, but it still doesn't change the fact that it's, as OP has so elegantly posited, 2deep4u.
