Japanese literature is some of the best out there (even mostly Eurocentric readers have to admit the greatness of Mishima, Soseki etc.), and the Ancient Chinese Taoist and Confucian texts are essential reading too. Also there's I think a peak in Chinese literature in the 20th century which is mostly overlooked in the West: authors such as Lu Xun, Lao She, Ma Jian, Qian Zhongshu, Shen Congwen etc.
