Everyone on the ship is so polarized in terms of personality (save groups of people like the harpooneers) that it seems melville is trying to disect the human brain into all these different parts. Notice how Ishmael doesn't really have much personality, and knows things about the boat that he shouldn't.

Yeah Melville does make the ship into an individual at times, with Ahab as the brain of sorts. It's only metaphor though, he isn't implying Ishmael is some disembodied ship-essence. The coming together of the men on the ship is most obviously a commentary on human society, and its attempt to combat the forces of nature, as well as its inevitable doom when its 'brain' is set to the impossible task of defeating an uncaring world.
