I like David Mitchell, myself.
David Mitchell is my favorite author. Every one of his books was truly a great read EXCEPT Slade House, could not relate to coming of age british people in the 80s

I've heard a few things about him but I'm afraid that I have no idea where to start. I don't think starting with Cloud Atlas would be a good place to begin.

My favorite writers under 65 right now are: Marlon James, Lydia Davis, Ben Fountain, Ben Lerner, William Vollmann, and maybe Elene Ferrante if she actually exists.
I have to say Jonathan Franzen. As far as I'm concerned he is deserving of the hype that has surrounded him. The Corrections and Freedom were both revelatory, and Purity, which I'm currently about halfway through, is looking to be yet another powerhouse. I have yet to explore his earlier works.
