Have you read any of Donald Barthelme's recommendations? I've read about 25, and 16 of those are now among my favorite books.

Great list, saving for future perusal. I've read O'Brien, Borges, Marquez, Pynchon, Sontag, Calvino, O'Connor, Morrison, Kundera, Bellow, and Mamet. Have Ellison, Lowry, Campbell, and Reed on my to-read list.
