Last thread hit bump limit.
I'll start:
How do you guys come up with plot ideas? I can think of certain motifs, scenes, characters, etc. for novels but motives, rising action, and just the main story really gets me. I mean what sets the entire thing into action. Really, just the conflict, to be honest family.
>>
>>7878813
I think of two very unlikely people to meet and then force them into something really hot.

Speaking of.

Last thread I was discussing with an anon what kind of conflict I could bring into a novel about a devout young man who submits to a BDSM Dom and thus has his world view and beliefs tested.

Keeping that open.

Philosophy people. I have a question. In this Monty Python sketch is there a deeper meaning to the line "Marx is claiming it was offside"? Or is it just the juxtaposition of two long, complicated sentences relating to philosophy and then one to do with football?

Can somebody explain this to me.
When you use the forward-slash (/) symbol in this context:
>I need to remember to purchase rice, chicken, apples/oranges.
The (/) symbol denotes 'one of the two', not 'both of these two fruits', right?
If that's true, please tell me. Also, does (//) mean 'both'?

I'm interested in symbols that denote 'less than or equal to', 'both', etc.
How can I use them in standard text?

Perverted linguistics question. I'm searching for the right word.
The allure of a woman is so fascinating. The 'physics' of how the vagina responds to when pressed, prodded, pushed, pulled, squeezed. Replace that word 'physics' with a more appropriate word. I'm referring to the quality of the vagina. You can replace it with any body part for that matter. But what is the best word to use in place of 'physics' that refers to composition and movement, how it moves, etc.

To put it another way. Cow's udders sway when the cow moves. They are spongy in composition. The whole quality of that body part. It's consistency relative to the rest of the body. The shape, texture, composition, feel, etc. What is that. What is the right word that refers to that.

It's all in the public domain now anyway so you can go to http://classics.mit.edu/Browse/index.html and check it out free before you commit to buying it.

Joyce and Pynchon you may or may not like, for the former it's generally recommended to start with Portrait of the Artist.

You find an agent who represents the sort of thing you want published, send out a query letter to said agent, and if you're lucky and you've got something that an agent sees value in, said agent will then represent your work and reach out to publishers for you.
If you get picked up, the publisher will set up a contract with you, and the agent will get a cut of that, and possibly any royalties you get. But without an agent, you're fucked. The best a publisher will do is send you a kind letter saying no thank you. Worst case, they'll laugh at you for even trying.

Frederick the Great, Frederick II of Hohenzollern, King of Prussia

Prussia was the state Hegel (is said to have) felt was the culmination of human rational institutions and Spirit in history, and Frederick the Great was its major founder in its contemporary form. It created the university system Hegel was teaching in, in its capital at Berlin, where Hegel was appointed and decorated by Frederick's successors.

Hegel really really liked Prussia.

You're doing it wrong. Everything has to serve the premise. If you force the plot to go a certain way for your own satisfaction then you're not letting the story breathe.

If the conflict is family, then start there. Think about the people, who is in conflict and why are they in conflict. Follow that up with most likely place they'd be located in to cause those circumstances, etc.

You claim the character is "quiet and sympathetic". Why does he randomly "brutally slay" this angel-type thing, and why did he "fall in lust" with her? No part of that is quiet or sympathetic. Like, at all.

Second, angels and demons are so cliche and are never, ever done in a way that doesn't make most readers cringe. I beg you to find a novel or some literary work where there was a demon or angel who didn't just gush edge, especially in a sexualized sense.

Now I want you to think hard about the entire scenario.

"I saw this angel-type thing and I really, really wanted to fuck it. I killed it. Woops. Good thing I'm quiet and sympathetic. Hmm, but that slain body is starting to look pretty good..."
>>
>>7887691
>what is context
I *believe* that context would remedy most of those issues. The angel-type thing isn't religious in anyways, I just couldn't think of a better term to describe something outside of the work that seems to possess a heavenly appearance, at least to the slaying character.
>>
>>7887712
No context would really change that.

Anyone else got some input? Dude doesn't want to hear me out.
>>
>>7887723
I think it would. A realistic analogue would be a criminal befriending a woman who happens to be a cop. Fate has it that she eventually has to take his crew in. He panics and shoots her, killing her.

okay, so there's a story and book for each character, all taking place in the same time range (a month, the same month) but from every other character's viewpoint. things from other people's points of view are told differently than others a lot of the time, and the characters forget things a lot while recalling the story.

the characters are very strange and "out there", like a gangster who tries to get every girlfriend he has to "accidentally" die, because he romanticises tragedy, or a 6th grade boy with no name who writes down every useless observation he sees, or a teenage girl who wants her achievements validated, so she follows the instructions that a tape recorder gives her, with a new tape every day, until she has become a full-on criminal following the instructions of someone she doesn't even know.

each book and character's story as they all intertwine parodies a different story achetype. some examples are: a crime novel, a children's adventure novel, a mystery novel, dramatic slice of life, and so on.

the final book contains the story of a boy recovering from a sickness in a hospital, and though there are references to the other stories here, he has nothing to do with anything, and defies what every other book had in common.
>>
>>7888293
it's not an unusual concept but few concepts are band new. i just think it would be a lot of work if you're trying to do entire books.
>>
>>7888293
That sounds like a hell of a lot of work but would be interesting to read if you can pull it off.
My only immediate criticisms are that it'll be very difficult to make their stories intertwine in any meaningful way without being huge spoilers for each other and that a single month may not be long enough for the character development arcs you describe to happen convincingly.
>>
>>7888298
well i feel it would be best that way, it would be more episodic

>>7888302
yeah, it would be hard, but if i put enough planning into it and made it perfect, it would be something i would very much love to see the light of day

This guy.

Here's a question - does this deserve its own thread now?
>>
>>7878813

You are right that plot is conflict. And it's characters that create conflict.

So you say you have characters -- so what is the conflict?

Say you've got a character like Jesse James. What's his conflict? Let's say he hates authority and he wants power.

What's he going to do then? Rob a bank or some shit. What happens when you rob a bank? You escape or you get caught.

There. You have a plot.

You develop everything on top of that. Rising action is inherent in most plots. You can figure out and deepen the motivation as you go along.

If you've got characters then you've got your plot.

A lot of people don't have characters. They have a scene or feeling they want to write about.

Have you thought about just making one novel or a short story collection?

Cloud Atlas did something quite similar to what you are suggesting. There are like 6 different characters all in different time periods and their stories are told in different genres.

They end up all coming together like stories within stories.

More important than the challenge of having to write several different novels is getting anyone to read them all.

I'd either not bother or just read the one that appealed to me.

1) Dreams.
2) Existing characters/character designs.
3) statements I want to make about stuff.

For example, the top athlete at my HS was also the kindest guy and one of the best students. Meanwhile, top athletes are always bad guys in stories. I am sick of that, so I would like to write a story to give that guy I knew some representation.

Did any of you actually enjoy The Iliad? I'm about half way through and I haven't actually enjoyed any of it so far. It's been just a burden that I have to get through and I keep reading other books instead. I grabbed a copy of Aesops Fables for about 2 bucks and smashed it out in an evening, it was great! I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it and it made me really realize how much I haven't been enjoying The Iliad. Is The Odyssey going to be any better?
I get that it is a different time but their general morality is so far removed from my own that I just feel like everybody is constantly making the worst decisions ever. The whole war is to get back some guys brothers waifu that is banging the dude that stole her away the whole time anyway. Also too much divine right and shit, seriously fuck those gods they're just assholes.

I'm just reading these because they're meant to be stepping stones to Plato... And I only want to read Plato as a stepping stone to Aristotle. I've read somewhat consistently for years and I recently decided to go back 'to the start' so to speak as I've generally just read a random hodgepodge of philosophy. But for that purpose would reading cliff notes on each chapter and a couple of essays on it suffice? I really want to just skip them and go right to either The First Philosophers or Herodotus.

tl;dr Did you enjoy reading The Iliad?

You're breaking your hermeneutic hymen. It's always painful the first time.

>understanding and interpretation thus always occurs from within a particular ‘horizon’ that is determined by our historically-determined situatedness. Understanding is not, however, imprisoned within the horizon of its situation—indeed, the horizon of understanding is neither static nor unchanging (it is, after all, always subject to the effects of history). Just as our prejudices are themselves brought into question in the process of understanding, so, in the encounter with another, is the horizon of our own understanding susceptible to change.

Try to understand that every worldview is complete and self-contained, and that every worldview is just one facet of a total philosophical anthropology. You're never going to be able to read shitloads of great literature properly if you can only read from your own perspective.

It's not just about suspending your own perspective though. It's about learning how to bridge and connect it with other perspectives. That's how you enlarge your own perspective, and make it more complete. Eventually you'll be able to read weird-ass medieval romances, and other shit with totally different values from your own, and you'll feel like equally weird-ass Homer and equally weird-ass, kind-of-an-asshole New Testament Jesus (and so on) are inside your head with you from previous readings of them, going "this shit's weird" right along with you. And then next time it'll be Homer, Jesus, and some medieval knight who thinks murdering dudes is OK as long as they're not noble.

It's all just facets of a total humanity. That's why you gotta push through it. Yeah it can definitely be tedious. Especially on the purely technical level, it's hard to read things that are very different from, or just more primitive forms of, your own culture's narrative structures. But again, by doing that, you expand your ability to read and understand in general. You make your mind more plastic and supple. The alternative is the mental sickness that is terminally retarding most people in the West right now, namely their brains being a collection of stock tropes and narrative forms. That shit limits not only your range of knowledge, but your range of possible forms of thought itself.

Thank you for your well thought out and articulated response anon.
I really didn't think about it that way and I believe that you're right. Even though I have been finding it a pain to read, I'll push though. I just wanted to... Rush ahead to the stuff that made more sense within my own perspective. Or I guess I suppose have it filtered through another person so I wouldn't have to do that mental work of bridging the weird worldview myself.

To be honest, I now feel pretty stupid. That's a whole way of looking at what I'm reading that I feel I've been missing out on. I will admit that I generally just go for books that make 'sense' to me or at most just marginally 'push out' the edges of understanding that I already have. I guess that's part of the uncomfortable feeling of breaking my hermeneutic hymen as you put it. To follow that analogy, could you recommend any textual lube that could help me with this transition? Or would you recommend that I keep plowing away at what I'm already doing while attempting to keep an 'open mind'?

What is with stanzas in poetry? Why is it written in this way, and how would you speak it? I've never studied poetry or really read any and have had no one to ask. Here's an example:

A green world, a sceen of green deep
with light blues, the greens made deep
by those blues. One thinks how
in certain pictures, envied landscapes are seen
(through a window. maybe) far behind the serene
...

Why break mid sentence like this? Do you speak as if it were starting or do you just keep reading and the lines and their form are merely aesthetic?
