It was surprisingly a lot more than just dump pulp scifi.

I just finished Solaris. Should I read this flick?

Can I get a good reader's summary and why it is better than most other novels of today?

H.G. Wells is a good writer. The story is focused but manages to cover several topics. It also presents a very interesting predicament for the protagonist, as he is stranded on a mysterious island. I found the book exciting and scary at times.

Besides like most of Wells' stuff, it's rather short so you can probably finish it in 2-3 sittings.
