Was this book released at the perfect point in Pynchon's bibliography? It is often cited as Pynchon's worst or second worst, but I'm really enjoying it. It feels nice to have a fun, simple, California-hippie-themed break between Pynchon's two massive tomes.

Yes. All the cameos from crying lot and gravitys rainbow are great. Also some characters introduced in Vineland reappear in against the day as well as Inherent vice.
