Is it worth reading the Hagakure?
>>7815981
Yes
I enjoyed Ghost Dog as well, OP.

So I read the Hagakure from a very long train ride from Chicago to here.

I actually first learnt about this book from milo
>>7816053
Never read the Hagakuri, can you loan me a copy? I'm still stuck on Murakami... Calvino etc
>>7815981
Yeah. Apart from the insights into the samurai mentality, and has plenty of enjoyable stories of pointless violence.
Pic related summarizes the book well enough.
>I yawned in front of my shogun better kill myself
>a peasant looked at me funny better kill him and all his friends
>my son got involved in a street fight better make him kill himself
>death death death death
>kill urself
It's an funny read, that's for sure.

a funny*
It is, but not as any sort of self help guide. Mishima's notes on it are very good.
>>7815981
It's basically just a handbook on how to be a suicidal gook coward.

lol
>>7815981
ask a friend to be your Kaishaku before beginning it, for you will surely dishonor yourself and need to commit seppuku before you are done

It has been ridiculed by many Japanese authors for its being written by an 'armchair' samurai, but it does touch certain aspects of the culture in enlightening ways- just make sure to take everything with a grain of salt.
Book of Five Rings is better tbhfam.

Probably will be the only good thing to come of this thread, so I'll kindly direct you to hold your attention for just a few moments longer on the book of the five rings, just so you don't forget that you're too dumb to even ask the right questions. Just a few more words here :^) OK now you may go
