There should be more text in here anyway, so okay, my issue with the cash register is this. A big city plays host to a lot of money and crime... important, even dominant, features of cities. Here, we have the shape of a cash register sitting illuminated among shadows. I do not know what Hopper had in mind when he painted it, but the setting looks like a big city, and a cash register sitting illuminated among shadows should suggest something relevant to the setting. Like money and crime. But he's not so crass as to have the painted the fucking Hamburglar with his fucking mask and galero breaking the window and digging into the cash register.
It's just there, being a cash register. And the shadows are just there, being still and very, very dark.
People talk about how spacious the painting is physically and emotionally. They are very isolated people. What is the space around them filled with, emotionally speaking? And the space outside? The cash register, that one Thing outside, makes the whole situation kind of menacing.
