Is sarcasm and irony the highest form of humor?
>>
Gee, I don't know. What do you think?
>>
>>7807438
The lowest, to be honest.
>>
In Germany, everyone is sarcastic and ironic all the time, even in situations in which it doesn't make any sense. I fucking hate it. Good sarcasm can be funny, though, but most of the time, it's low humor for low people.
>>
I once heard sarcasm described as what people who don't have good social skills do, because they don't know how to communicate normally and actually be funny, so they resort to sarcasm.
>>
>>7807442
aha
>>
>>7807543
yeah got it in one basically

theres a reason dumb people and redditors etc like to use sarcasm all the time, its also why meme shows like archer and rick and morty are so popular, people watch those shows and go "wow i could make up humour like this!" (because there are no jokes)

Being rude is a joke tho
>>
Lowest form of wittiness. Some people pull it off though, for example some Tim and Eric sketches.

Which authors do you think utilize sarcasm well in their books?
>>
>>7807583
Twain

What do I look like? A joke factory?
>>
Sarcasm is the easier and the lowest form of humor I can think of. Everbody can—and nowadays tries to—lean back, pretend to being over what's going on, smile and acknowledge with a higher tone. Being genuinely funny is difficult and requires both a precise knowledge and a wit spirit. Irony is way overrated. Just look at the way people here use greentext to not answer an unpleasant argument.

These. I will add that, for sarcasm in particular, there's something negative at its core that diminishes what it touches, which I can't conceive of being part of the highest form of anything good. I mean for how easy and cheap punnery is (something often deemed the lowest form of humor), at least it doesn't have that negative aspect at its core.
Maybe this doesn't necessarily apply to irony as much.

Céline ofc.

the only thing worse is puns

Irony's alright a lot of the time but sarcasm usually gets my goat these days. The amount of smug, sneering "its almost like..." comments online is astounding

Have you ever talked with someone that is a bit slow and just thought that you can't say anything with irony because you know they will think you're serious?

I feel like I can't even truly connect with these people. Everything feels superficial when compared to ironic banter.
>>
You can't truly connect to people without irony? Sounds hellish. Are you one of those uber-hipsters buried in 8 levels of irony
>>
Haha, no, only people with autism think that saying things they don't literally mean, but rather the opposite, is "funny", because they are unable to appreciate the sublimity of forms like the knock-knock joke.

For example most auitsts, wouldn't laugh at this:
Clown: Knock knock
Friend: Who's there?
Clown: 9/11
Friend: 9/11 who?
Clown: You said you'd never forget!

Even though it's riotous. They just don't have the neurons to process it, unlike lower, more basal "ironic" humour, where they aren't speaking literally.

Just a reminder to the peanut gallery: this poster is referring to OTHER people as having autism.

Thank you, I'll be here all night.
>>
>>7807652
I'm not really, it's just that being ironic and having the other person understand my true intention gives me the feeling that we're on the same wavelength even when not expressly stated.

If that is removed entirely then it feels like small-talk. I'm not talking about being ironic all the time, but once in a while. It's good.
>>
>>7807675
Thank you for making that clear, in case someone misunderstood and thought I was being ironic, and thus had autism.

I mean, if that were true, I would never for the life of me laugh at GEMS like this:
Harlequin: Knock knock
Buddy: Who's there?
Harlequin: To
Buddy: To who?
Harlequin: To whom :)

Yes

>in a conversation
>have opinion I think most will disagree with
>say it as a joke
>either they laugh and say "hey that is actually a good point though" or "Ha, can you believe there are some people who actually think that"

Either way I'm safe.
