I've read most of the Greeks but I've never had complete copies; law-related stuff because I'm thinking of law school. The coverless one is Montesquieu's Rousseau.

Excited for my first Joyce and I haven't read Melville in ages.

This was all ~$50 from a local used book place.

Anything new from you guys?

>>
>The Stranger
>Something Happened
>The Trial
>The Metamorphosis
>We
>One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
>The Forever War
>100 Years of Solitude

Nothing unique, but I'll be occupied for a decent bit.
Unfortunately I played myself and didn't realize I ordered The Metamorphosis in English until it was too late. Was hoping I could use it to work on my German, but that's out the window now.

How is this a good thing? it's imposing another person's interpretation before you even start reading the book

If you're planning on using a book to improve your German i wouldn't buy any Kafka unless you are already incredibly proficient. He uses a bizarre dialect and strange sentence structure that confuses a lot of regular German readers, or so i'm told.

Top stack from the local independent store ($6), bottom from Thrift Books ($10). I'd already read the Rubaiyat, Beowulf and the Pavel book, will probably get to the Judge Dee one next.

Is that one anon who collected editions of the Rubaiyat still around? I think I might end up doing that too; this one has a cute inscription in the front from someone's grandparents, who think "the poetry is beautiful, but the philosophy it expresses is all wrong." My Penguin Classics version has one of the poems, and "I hope you enjoy it, Love, Regina" from November of 1988. It seems often-inscribed enough that I'll probably limit myself to editions with something nice in the front, like I do with my copies of The Book of Tea.

>>7811159
pretty sure that Genji translation is the loose public domain one, still neat find~~~ it's considered very poetic in its own way
>>
>>7811159
How is thrift books in terms of shipping speed / consistency? Also condition of the books?
>>
>>7811219
I know, I already have the Tyler and Waley translations as well. It was on TB for $3 with the coupon I had, so I wanted to round off the set. Still need to get the new Washburn one. Which one do you prefer most?

>>7811228
Shipping is almost always very quick, I usually get books within a week if I order on a weekday.

Their condition indicators are kind of weird--I've got plenty of "Acceptable"s (especially NYRB ones) that look absolutely great. But they don't rate something VG when it's falling apart, as far as I've seen. "Good"s have always had their dust covers. It's bad to buy Penguin Classics from them because their sticker is awful and peels a lot of the spine cover part off with it.

They've only ever forgot to send me one book, out of the ~200 I've ordered so far, and I think it was because I had a last minute "condition upgrade" at the check-out, which someone must have missed. They'll give you the condition upgrade (from Good to Very Good, etc.) if it saves them on shipping.

I really like them, they've replaced PaperbackSwap for me. You can get books pretty reliably for $3 each if you use coupons and discounts well. I also love that they designate which ones are library discards, so I don't have to feel wronged when I receive one.

How fast/how often do you guys finish books. With the mentality that it is no race and that you must read for comprehension, these quick pickups would take me several months to get through.

either there are more than 10 people on lit that post in these threads or you guys read scary fast.

Not sure. Something is better than nothing though. John E Woods is generally considered the pinnacle of Mann translations, in a word his translations are beautiful.

secondly, you are evidently not a German speaker. Anyone who reads German will tell you Woods is unequaled- the best modern day translator of German works

It took me a few weeks to finish Monte Cristo, TBK, and Catch 22, and those three are the longest non genre fiction I've read in recent memory.
