Why do Socrates and Alcibiades refer to eachother as lovers, when, according to 'Symposium', they never had sex? What is the significance of the way the word 'lover' is used in Plato's dialogues?
>>
Probably just a shit translation.
>>

Im just guessing here, but maybe he ment it in a platonic love way, between 2 intellectuals - because they discuss and shit
ps. never read shit
>>

Fucking questions like this are what happen when you don't start wth the Greeks and get a shit edition with zero critical apparatus.

This is literally the origin of "Platonic love."

>when Xanthippe smashes the cake Alcibiades has made for Socrates
Bitch knew what was up. Plato just didn't want to defame his mancrush.

They use φιλον (Philon) which means beloved but in the friendship sense, it's from the same root as Philo-sophy (Love of wisdom). They don't use ἐραστός (Erastos) the term attributed to erotic lover. All translations have this issue because there is no direct equivalent to the words φιλον in English that carries the same meaning. It's a common issue in all Greek works, that's why finding a good translation is important.

Based. Can you Ancient Greek?
>>
>>7804784
Yeah, first year studying it though, so it's still rough.
>>
>>7803807
"Lover" usually means the active in the relationship. The "beloved" usually refers to the passive (that is, the sweet, sweet boipussy).

At least, that's what my Oxford edition says. Dunno how accurate it is.

This is what was obviously meant.

I only read modern Greek, not ancient, but shouldn't that be φιλία for the concept of friendly love and φίλος for the friendly lover as a person? These two words, when used in modern Greek, mean simply friendship and friend, respectively. Couldn't these words be used in the context of the Platonic dialogues too? I mean, why search for an elusive word, one that is neither friendship not love? Is the word "friendship" in English too weak to designate the kind of relationship implied by Plato?

Also, in modern Greek it's εραστής for carnal lover. I wonder if that changed too from ancient Greek.

its not gay to have a male friend.

plus didnt them greeks get a little more friendly with other males during that time and it wasnt considered taboo?

So should I engage myself in the world of NGE family?
>>

its really overhyped
the 'depth' and 'mysticism' is really just random christian symbols everywhere and people crying and going 'waaa i must learn 2 love myself'
>>
>>7804772
basically this.
t. had Ancient Greek for 4 years in highschool
>>
>>7807501
Doesn't that leave something in that making it worthy of redemption and scholarly study to an extent?

was alcibiades an übermensch?

literally: what?
>>

Yeah, I don't understand what you're getting at.

You're arguing grammar like he used φιλον only, he obviously used many of the dozen forms for the same word, I just used the first one that came to mind. You're either not very knowledgeable of the language and just google translating stuff or I'm not understanding what you're trying to say.

εραστησ is the same in ancient greek, it's just the masculine noun and I used ἐραστός which is the adjective.

>>7804784
Can confirm that he's correct. I've studied Ancient Greek at Oxford for 4 years now and φιλος can definitely refer to non-erotic love.

Classics course?

alcibiades was certainly an alpha, but i wouldn't say he was an ubermensch

diogenes was an ubermensch though

In NGE there is a lot of psychoanalytic symbolism as well.

that's.........basically pretty accurate

Yeah, you probably should. I went into it hating anime—it changed my life

It's a fun watch, but mostly for atmosphere and animation quality. The depth is not going to rival anything even medium tier lit could provide.

hundred years in future people will think that romance was all about banging hoes

and that hilarious episode where Glaucon gets fired and goes around town with Socrates helping people until one of them gives him a job
>>
>>7803807
Love back then meant sort of a desire to be completed and reach some kind of homeostasis. Philosophizing.

Do you think Socrates will challenge Archimede in the next episode?
