what does lit think of Jack Kerouac other than On The Road?
Visions of Cody is an incredibly original kind of masterpiece. Desolation Angels and Big Sur are also good.

we all read Kerouac in high school, so we hate him
also, we're against degeneracy
Journey to the End of the Night was great
I think what people miss about kerouac is that he actually actively hated that bohemian lifestyle he lived, and wrote something that wasn't meant to be idolized. Kerouac was more of a spiritual writer, and in a sense we can read his novels as a journey of finding one's own beliefs. It's also important to note that a lot of the stuff he wrote about was the expression of a frustration in post-ww2 society with everything being clean cut and uniform. Kerouac may have ended up hating the road lifestyle, but it was essential to his escape from the boredom of routine of post-war american life
I want to read On The Road (I didn't read it in high school, not even the sparknotes. I thought I was cool) but it's my cunt ex-girlriend's favorite book. Girl almost ruined my life so it's hard to sit down and read it without getting pissed off.

Yeah, Don DeLillo and some Russian literature are now hard for me to read because of a girl.

It's horse shit. Kerouac is influential as fuck and I want to read that but goddamn it makes me angry.
I didn't care for it. But, that's just me.
