If political philosophy is your thing, reading all the guys from around the fall of the republic is necessary.
Everyone should read the Aeneid, Metamorphoses and some Plutarch

>literally skips the entire Roman republic

There aren't "household names" quite like with Greece, so just shop around. Plenty of Roman-era epic poetry to choose from (check the Loeb wiki page for a whole section on it). Ovid, Catullus, Plutarch, maybe some drama.
Also Livy for sure just because he's a lot of fun.

Not to mention earlier folks. Machiavelli's Discourses are ostensibly directly based on Livy, while leaning heavily on Polybius, who, along with Machiavelli, leaned on Plato.
>>7782955
if you want to study philosophy, just skip to Descartes and work into modern philosophy. Just briefly look over the Romans and medieval philosophers. Nobody takes them seriously anymore.

"yeah just go right into the metaphysics you'll be fine"

Nobody takes Descartes seriously anymore

People mostly don't agree with Descartes but he's still constantly mentioned. The cogito is one of the most important, in terms of influence (positive and negative), conceptions of all early modern and contemporary philosophy.
