I'm curious. I think most anons here know at least two languages and when I say know, I'm talking a good reading level, enough to read literature.
What languages do you speak? Mother tongue? How did you learn your languages and how are you learning now?
>>
>>7756039
Also a lot them are faking it, or had to learn English, because their country (incl Europoorans) sucks.
Don't worry about learning another language. It's one thing to be a stupid obnoxious tourist, another to be educated and not complacent about being monolingual.
>>
I can only read in three. Been working on chinese and latin for a long time, not much success.

German from high school, native english
>>
Mother tongue English. I learnt German at school, and kept it up, so I'd say fluency. I did Persian at uni so definitely fluent.
The only thing is... I'm very anxious in general and never speak in these languages, just read literature. I don't really speak in English a lot either desu senpai.
>>
Norwegian (+Danish, Swedish), English, German.

Would like to learn Italian.
>>
Mother tongue: Mandarin. Also ancient Chinese(Wen Yan Wen).

I started learning English at 6. Took Spanish, German, Latin in high school. I'd say I'm fluent in all of them. I don't speak German but I can comprehend books and write in perfect grammar.
>>
>>7756076
Please guide me to learning mandarin ba3ba
>>
>>7756076

Don't confuse people, mandarin is the dialect; wen yan wen is written.

Native: Spanish
I understand English at a somewhat high level I think, I read a lot of English lit and non-fiction works in English.

Currently learning Japanese, I am able to hold basic conversations with natives, understand youtube comments, read yotsuba, those kinds of things.
Still need to learn much more vocab in order to read writers like Banana Yoshimoto or Murahackmi, at least 10 more years of study to be able to read Mishima.

Wanna learn French and German too, also going to learn Latin and Ancient Greek at school.

Native English, c1 level Japanese

It took about 2 years before I could really read stuff and 3 years before I could grind akutagawa and abe kobo short stories, but I was focusing on speaking then. Now I read about one book a week.

Since it will be impossible to move to the actual countries in the near future, I'm thinking about starting italki for French, Greek, and eventually Russian.
>>
OP here. How do you learn languages /lit/? How many of you are complete autodidacts?
Also I'm native Spanish speaker, self-taught English and going the same path for German.
>>
>>7756039
Native English, and decent level French. I can read and write fine in it, though my speech is subpar. I know very basic Japanese and Dutch, but both quite rudimentary.

How can you think there aren't any benefits to learning languages?
>>
Spanish french english and some italian.

working on russian now. learned them from travel and friends. mostly self taught tho
>>
>>7756282
OP said multiple languages though? You only learned one.
>>
>>7756244
I'm a native portuguese speaker.
Learned english through video-games, music and television.
I tried to learn Latin following a more methodic path. Didn't work (The lack of cheap entertainment makes it too hard). Might try it again.
>>
My native language is Portuguese, I speak/write/read fluently in English. I also can hold some communication and read some stuff in German, thought my read and writing are way better in Latin.
I would like to learn French and Italian hereafter, and since Portuguese is my native language I'll not have much trouble with these languages (maybe more with French).
And also will start ancient greek in a few weeks.
>>
>>7756282
Well done, are you Brit? How do you get so many international friends?
>>
Mother tongue is Russian. Learned Hebrew as I was born in Israel, and English from school and media. I moved to Finland a few years ago, so I guess I'd have to pick up Finnish as a 4th language.

Still literature.

Western european. Learned Chinese, now learning Korean. I find Chinese a lot easier because even with words I havent learned, I can guess their meaning and look them up.

Learned Chinese as an option in University, then did a year of intensive language studies in China. Then 6 months of Korean in Korea.

Read as much as you can and watch tv with the subs in that language. Then just learn grammar and words.
>>
>>7756039
English and Russian fluently, Spanish poorly

Used to speak Georgian but I forgot it when I was 10 or so.

Well obviously not if you are a beginner. But if you get past intermediate, you can know most of the words spoken. If theres one word you dont know, pause and write it down for later. With english subtitles, i end up reading and not listening to what they say.

Taiwanese romance drama that i watched just for Chen Bolin, he also did a funny movie you might like called 变身超人 and theres also 蓝色大门 about a girl who has a crush on her female friend and Chen Bolin has a crush on her. Not a crappy drama. But an actual film exploring unrequited love and growing up.
>咱们结婚吧
Mainland drama about two 30 year olds who are pressured by their parents to get married. Bad acting too, but what can you do.

Biggest problem with Chinese media is it is all garbage. Spongebob in chinese is pretty alright too 海绵宝宝

Also heres the first intro i ever had to korean.

Thanks a lot, I just began learning Chinese a few months ago and I'm still excited to keep going.
Not sure what it is, maybe it just feels unique (to me).
>>
>>7756062
Wrong! I can read in 8, speak in 3 at a literati level.
Sorry my response is delayed.

I snapped at Europoorans due to recently visiting /pol/ despite better discretion.
>>

Have you seenWarriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale? Taiwanese two-part movie.

It's fucking amazing.
>>
Native Hungarian, fluent in English, babbling some in French.

I started learning English in elementary school. Since the age of 10 I've been playing video games in English, listening music in English, watching movies in English, so I got accustomed to the language. I read the Lord of the Rings in original with a dictionary when I was 17, since that I consider myself fluent.

I started to learn French at the university, I did three semesters. In December, I went to Paris. I was able to ask for directions, buy food, do a little small talk, etc. in French, but nothing more complex. I tried to read L'Etranger, but yet its too difficult for me.
>>
English & French fluent. Did Spanish at school so i can make myself understood and understand simple texts (i.e. newspaper, not cervantes) if i take my time with it.

Currently learning Mandarin in Taiwan, I'd say I'm at a pre-intermediate to intermediate level.

Mother tongue Spanish, I speak and read English. First I had a very "intuitive" English because I was born and raised in a very turistic part of Mexico, however I pick up English speaking literature and bought myself a grammatical book on the language. Right now I´m learning German, but now I am actually doing it with the guidance of a teacher instead of by myself.

Jesus christ, what has America done to you for you to even ask this question?

Its really rewarding especially because its so slow going.

Learn all the radicals well. Trust me. Spend a few weekends just learning all the radicals. It will help your reading and writing improve much faster
>>
I speak english and extremely basic level Spanish. Can anyone recommend me Spanish novels to help me get better? I don't even mind if they're advanced, as long as they're Mexican Spanish and written grammatically correct

Is it that I don't already know french by now, or that I'm asking such a silly question?

Duolingo seems too gamed. I am apparently 40% fluent, but I don't really know jack shit. I listened to about 20 pimsleur tapes too. All I know is how to ask where st jaques street is. Fuck
>>
>>7756930

I'm >>7756924 and I'm talking about your question. Why would it be too late? That's actually stupid. You're talking about knowledge and there's no age for that.
Duolingo is good, but there's no resource that's going to make you fluent when you finish the program.
I use a combination of duolingo, memrise and online courses for German, but that's not enough. You need to immerse yourself in the language you want to learn. Watch shows, listen to podcasts, chat with people.
Go to /int/ and lurk a few days.
>>
>>7756951
But doesn't it get progressively harder as you age ? Or is that mom-science
>>
>>7756986
It does, but don't blow it out of proportion. You just have to work a little more.
>>
Native language is English.
I also speak Japanese and German.

Also Yiddish. In everyday life it's useless but I love it nonetheless.
I'd like to start learning Danish and Czech.
>>
>>7756068
>I did Persian at uni so definitely fluent.
This amazes me how some schools are good at teaching languages for students to actually achieve fluency until they graduate.
>>
Mother tongue: Catalan. Learnt Spanish at school so I'm bilingual since 3 years old.
My best friend was Welsh so I had a huge incentive to learn and practise English. Right now I'm at C1 level, but I'm taking the C2 exam when I come back from Scotland.
I've also been learning German for two years, but it's proving to be a struggle. I do love the language though, but I'm still stuck at A2.
>>

English and Langue2Molière.

I have German lessons in school, and there was a time where my overall grade essentially depended on my grades in languages, so I learned the shit out of German, and started crossing over from belgium on the weekends to go drink in germany, meet new people, and practice.Today, I think could read book in German, and understand 75% of the words in it, but I wouldn't understand half of the implied meaning of things, or feel the wanted effects in the rhetoric.
