OP here. I was very close to inserting Tolkien into the image but then I'd be here all day, adding plebs of that calibre. What's amusing is that the vast majority of the population didn't even give a shit about him until the LotR movies.
>>
>>7754405
Tolkien was well respected before the movies. Of course huge and major hollywood production is going to gather more attention around him. I bet you are new.
>>
>>7754405
Why is that amusing?
>>
>>7754411
He was especially famous in the western world in the sixties. It was pretty much a fad to read his work at the time. I blame the hippies.

More like 3/5th of that chart are over-hyped, and 2/5th are memeed out of proportion so that they lose all original merit and meaning.

It's objective reality that plebs highly regard, on the whole, pleb authors. Identifying and consuming quality prose is not a skill that every reader possesses but the elite tend to agree on what constitutes quality. Inb4 tautology.

1984 is just a cuck version rip-off of Anthem. Animal Farm is just a biased rewrite of history with unrealistic and nonsensical animal characters whom would have lacked the necessary selection pressures to develop complex language. His essays are simply weak and flawed rhetoric with mind-numbing emotional appeals towards socialism, a culture destroying cancer that is predicated on tearing down the intellectual elite to buffer the plebeian ignorant masses. No thanks.

i liked the essays, i didn't find them blatantly ideological

No It is a rip-off of We.

Your Animal Farm critique is moderately funny, in a kind of innocent way.

His essays are fine, but of course I am referencing the texts which is completely overshadowed by his popular works (which really are "memeed" out of proportion). Down and Out in Paris and London, Burmese Days, and Homage to Catalonia are among the greatest works in the interwar period. Orwell had his peak before the war, and afterwords he produced works which are of decent quality. I think that it would be hard to argue that 1984 and Animal Farm aren't enduring. But nonetheless I implore you to read some of his greater works like the ones I listed above, it will give you a better look into this mind.

Also 1984 has been so tainted by the right, that you would think that Orwell was a fascist

>over-hyped
>no discernible talent

Pick one. Because at least Orwell and Hemingway have good moments or books. Its indisputable to anyone who's read their works, there's a reason they're regularly listed among some of the greats and most influential.

If you haven't read Hemingway's best short stories I'd recommend it. And Shooting and Elephant is fantastic.

I could see this. I don't think Lovecraft is necessarily any great talent, but he's respectively creative in regards to mythos. Fun pulp-fiction that's elevated a bit.

>>7754476
Confirmed for not reading his essays. He wasn't a hardline socialist by any means, and had a number of different "right wing" beliefs. He was very pro-gunrights for one thing. Anyways, 1984 is entirely about governmental control: a natural consequence of increasing its size.
>>
>>7754516
I have read a few of his essays but I haven't read the works you mentioned. Fell for the memes etc.

>wasn't a hardline socialist by any means
>had a number of different "right wing" beliefs
>governmental control: a natural consequence of increasing its size
Hmmmm... If this is true, I'll give him another shot and see how much I can bear.

>I can't read things I disagree with
>>
>>7754542
Well it depends right. Its been a while since i read his essays but i think he's very much a centrist. I thought he fought on the left-wing side in the Spanish revolution, but that he became very disillusioned about socialism because of how things unfolded.

Shooting and Elephant is more or less an indictment of imperialism in Burma, but I still find it very moving. Its only a few pages.

Just keep in mind that even IF Orwell was a leftwinger in the past, that practically translates to a centrist of today.

The essay of his that I remember most is his one on the English Language. In it he criticizes the left so-called elitists the most because of their way of wrapping up their writing in deceptive ways.

I don't understand people who think he's a commie or a fascist desu.
>>
>>7754562
Sounds good, thanks anon.
>>
hemmingway is the worst desu; not that he's the worst writer out of the bunch, but actually intelligent people who understand that the others are bad/overrated still often seem to rate him far too highly
>>
>>7754562

depends how you define leftwing. socially he'd probably be centrist, not a sjw type leftwinger anyway but economically he'd be fairly staunchly left-wing especially in comparison to todays 'elite' left (the likes of blair, clinton etc)
>>
>>7754512
Kafka is boring entry level pleb tier
>>
>>7754588

nah, not boring anyway
>>
>>7754580
This. He's better than many contemporary authors but he's praised far too highly, for what is fairly mediocre writing.
>>
>>7754580
In all honesty I sort of feel this in the end. Hemingway is one of my favorite authors, but I can acknowledge that in terms of how skill he is at the craft, its not comparable to real masterpieces.

But that said, I think that his best short stories deserve praise, and that the few great lines of prose he has in each book are so poignant that they impress me more than some entire books.

>"If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry"

Maybe I'm pleb. But those lines strike me with more truth and sincerity than I could find in the work of an entire level. And even if his writing isn't as technically strong, its authenticity is what i value.
