roll some dice and pick the respective letters in the alphabet

Most of the time, not always. Sometimes it isn't about the meaning of the name and just how it sounds, or if you picture them in your mind and they look like that name. Take the name "Jessica" for example. You here that name and immediately recognize that this is a bitch character.

whichever character is introduced first gets named Emory Custard and stays that way the entire first draft. been that way with everything i've ever written
