So I've been thinking of picking up some Eco, maybe Name of the Rose or Focault's Pendulum, but I hear wildly mixed reviews.
On one hand are the readers who say the books are amazing, well-researched and well-written, and that you can learn a lot from reading them.
On the other hand are the readers who say his books are incredibly dense and difficult, that you need a degree in medieval history and linguistics to understand them.
What's /lit/'s take on Eco? Is there a better volume to begin with? Good translations to pick up?
