Hi /lit/, recently read the call of Cthulhu and am in the mood for some spooky stories. Just wanted to ask for any recommendations on essential horror books.

Thank you

Just finished this and it's now one of my favorite books

Seems quite interesting, will definitely give it a read.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Of recent authors, give Ligotti a try, he writes great short stories, get Teatro Grottesco

Also try The Imago Sequence by Laird Barron, another good "modern" horror writer.

If you like "weird" and horror get VanderMeer's The Weird, a huge collection of short stories/novellas from the last 100 years.

These, as well as Arthur Machen and Ambrose Bierce if you want things more contemporary to Lovecraft rather than modenr.

Awesome dude thank you so much.
Will give all these a go, The Weird collection is exactly what I was looking for, much appreciated.
>>
Algernon Blackwood was a favorite of Lovecraft. Check out his stuff.
>>
Modern stuff (all short-story collections)

Mark Samuels - The Man Who Collected Machen
Nathan Ballingrud - North American Lake Monsters
Richard Gavin - At Fear's Altar
Reggie Oliver - Flowers of the Sea
Nicole Cushing - The Mirrors
Brendan Connell - Unpleasant Tales

Will do, thanks.
>>
The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock is Southern Gothic with some truly frighting themes. No monsters or anything but the people are fucking horrifying.

Very nice. have noted these down, will definitely look into them.
Thanks for the recommendations man

Sounds good. will add it to the list, thank you.
>>
I enjoyed Joe Hill's 20th Century Ghosts. It's got a good mix of stories, and it really showcases what he's all about.

Seems great, will look into it.
Thanks for the recommendation

Every suggestion here sucks. Read John Dies At The End by David Wong. It's hilarious and terrifying, ain't no try-hard Ligotti garbage. Also better than any King novel, creepier than any Lovecraft.

>everything here sucks
>posts gimmicky shit from Cracked of all places

Yeah, nah

Don't care. Your loss. Yeah Wong writes for Cracked and Cracked is terrible. Still better than anything suggested, buttboi.

I picked up a collection of Bierce stories last year and I waa really disappointed. I remember liking The Eyes of the Panther, and also the one with a title that had to do with a gulch, but really disliked the rest.

"everybody stop liking what I don't like".
>>
>>7713945
Ligotti isn't spooky.
>>
>>7713944
John Dies... is too far inside everyone's comfort zone, that's the problem with it
>>
>>7713953
No one here read it... It's outside /lit/'s zone.

Now this is high quality bait
