What is your approach to plotting? Do you make shit up as you go along, or do you carefully outline each event in your story before you start writing?
Are there any books on this subject that you would recommend?

Honestly though, all you can do is get two ideas you like equally and write both using plot and no plot.
Writing is merely a way of communicating your dreams/ideas. You have to figure out which method works best for you.
