It kindof ripped its structure off from Finnegans Wake, actually. The lengths are similar, they both use four parts with the last one being the shortest, etc.

I remember reading that the four part structure was an influence of some specific thing for Joyce in the introduction to Finnegans Wake but I forget who/what it was.

It is a very very specific account of the split that occurs between in society as modernism and then into postmodernism

I looked it up and it was actually some book called "The New Science" by some Italian guy. Joyce adapted the "recirculation" of Finnegans Wake from it's cyclical view of history. There's a cyclical aspect to Gravity's Rainbow too.
