Usually fairly nondescript outside of a prescribed purpose, usually comedic, eg Major Major Major.

Usually the painfully symbolic, like Hiro Protagonist, Dhalgren's Captain Kamp/Earnest Newboy and a guy I know who wrote a play with a character called Euan Dai Mann (billed in the Dramatis Personae [there was a Dramatis Personae] as 'an Everyman')
