Singer is kind of poppy too imo, I don't actually like him at all but I like to keep up to date with the few people in the modern who have novel philosophical insights no matter how wrongheaded they are.

There are several edible animals which can be ethically eaten, most of them shellfish. If you're only concerned with pain and not the self preservation aspect, most shellfish and crustaceans are fair game. Some people take the rational out of the self preservation instinct which leaves them eating fruits and nuts since plans do have self preservation instincts, though they are not rational.
Singer's a vegan of convenience, he's largely moved away from animal rights towards global poverty as his main concern.
