define worth it

I've read it twice, so yes.

Time input to reading all volumes vs enjoyment maybe even existential perspective.

I'm reading #4 now.
English is not my native language, but I'm reading it in English (I don't know French).
It's been a wild ride. Parts I haven't understood because of language, because of the text itself or because it gets thick and boring.
But all in all I recommend it.
Also, I didn't have an 'end' to reading it, therefore I just absorbed more things and have liked it even more.

Do you speak French? If yes, read Proust.

Do you speak German? Read Goethe.

Do you speak English? Read Shakespeare.

Hmm, those others fit better with Racine I think. Proust's comparisons would probably be Musil and Joyce, respectively.

And yes, I know you're saying each is the greatest writer their language has yet produced---or ever will---but still feels odd to put Proust next to two dramatists/'poets.'
