I haven't read it but I've heard of his theory.
IMO we should take the ancient people at their word and assume that they really were in contact with spirits. They knew the difference between spirits and their own minds. They did not constantly experience their own inner thoughts and feelings as external spirits or gods acting through them. There are parts in Homer's Iliad where the characters are self-reflecting.
This just seems like a dogmatic materialists way of covering-up the fact that all ancient cultures agreed that there are spirits which interact with men.
it's interesting in the way conspiracy theories are interesting.
