Why the fuck would it? The average French reader isn't aware of half the great writers in English, I see no reason why the reverse would not be true.

I haven't read anything he wrote except a preface to my edition of Flaubert's Trois contes but I'll make an effort to shortly.
I have a feeling that we're going to get a few big literary deaths this year.
