I just finished Kafka's The Trial. It was excellent.

The law is one thing. The law happening in real life is another thing altogether.
The wear and tear on our spirits/minds that we acquire when trying to explore the metaphorical "law" because it's made unnecessarily complex to shield itself from logical inquiries by sensible average folks.

Not on The Trial but Kafka in general. Jorge Luis Borges, Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin & David Foster Wallace all wrote essays on Kafka, if you want to know how a handful of writers and philosophers feel about the whole thing. Borges was particularly interesting.
I was pretty spooked when K. was at work and opened the closet for the second time and found them still being punished.
