fun reading but, what's the fucking point if i don't agree with anything in this book?
>>
You're too pleb for it basically. You better not be reading it as a political treatise because that's super Reddit.
>>
>>7539507
it's hard not to

>what's the fucking point if i don't agree with anything in this book?

Are you fucking kidding me with this?
>>
I like the fact that it advocates human eugenics while predating Darwin by 2200 years.

Also it advocates
>(Greek) nationalism
>propaganda and information control
>organised economy
>ethnic homogeneity
>diminished role of women
>authoritarian governance
>rejects pacifism

Plato is a Greek national socialist.

The anti-monogamy and Plato's views on military campaigning are kind of silly though.

inb4 ironic work

Glaucon was right and Socrates just bored everyone until they left
>>

>diminished role of women
Weren't there Women in the Guardian Caste?
>>
you think the only valuable things to read are those with which you agree?
>>
>>7539586
Fairly sure they weren't. Socrates was redpilled as fuck.
>>
>>7539523
i didn't read the book but i want to shitpost anyway: the post
>>
>>7539586
Socrates pretty much has the attitude that women should try to do what they are best at, but that they will still be worse at it than a man.

Basically the only reason they are still in Socrates ideal city is because they are still needed to punch out babies.
>>
Did you copy this from a 1star review on goodreads from that shit thread you fuckers always make or what
>>
>>7539589
Fairly sure you didn't read the book.

Very explicitly egalitarian.

Quote it.
>>
>>7539586
Yeah, Plato goes out of his way to mention it several times during that section of the book.

Quote it.
455d
>'Well, do you know of anything at which human beings practice in which the male sex isn't superior to the female, in all the respects mentioned? Or are we to waste time talking about things like weaving, or looking after pancakes or stews, where the female sex does seem to count for something, and there's nothing more ridiculous than if a woman comes off second best?'
>"You're right" said Glaucon
455e
>'In that case my friend, among those pursuits appropriate to running a city none belongs to a woman because she's a woman, or for that matter to a man because he's a man. The requisite natures are similarly scattered among both types of creature, so that woman naturally shares in every pursuit and so does man, although in all of them a woman is a weaker thing than a man'.

This.
What's the point in reading something that doesn't say what I think????????!????!?
>>
ITT: people reading the Republic as if it is an isolated book in-itself and not part of a bigger canon not only of Plato, but also of Ancient Greek philosophy.
