Just saw this film. Does /lit/ approve of that guy, or is the film just sucking his teet cause he's dead?
>>

I didn't think it made DFW look good at all. I thought the movie character came off as insecure, snarky, disingenuous and still nursing and ugly addiction to TV. I don't think any thinking adult could watch that and think "wow DFW was such a hero."
>>
>>7518775

You should ask Bret Easton Ellis about it.
>>
>>7518775
Great movie about writing and writers, sits next to Wonder Boys on my shelf.
>>
>>7518775
Why the fuck is he wearing 5 layers? Did the writers get confused and make DFW a homeless man?
>>
>>7518869
They're trying to make him look bigger.

Apparently they made seagul put on like 30kgs for the role.

It just made him seem like a fat slob.
>>
>>7518775
Does he talk about the audience puss
>>
>>7518775
I cried at the end.

DFW wasn't perfect, and that's okay, but he was very human - and that's what he would have wanted
>>
>>7518802
What did that nihilist had to say abt it (I'm just asking bc I seek to fuel my hatred against him (even though I won't ever watch this film myself))? I remember that Ellis brushed Infinite Jest away as unreadable junk.
>>
>>7518791
This pretty much. DFW was quite intuitive, Jason must have interpreted this as meekness.

>>7518879
DFW wasnt the most hygienic person you know
>>
It's safe to say that Jason played Wallace pretty terribly. But from whichever you look at it, we could have had worse.

If it wasn't Lipsky cashing in, it would have been someone else. We could have seen a much much worse Wallace, and I'm sure one day we will. I was just glad they didn't show him as l a cringeworthy 'tourtured genius' and glorified his suicide or something like that.
>>
>>7518894
>implying Wallace would have EVER wanted to be portrayed by anyone, let alone, a Hollywood movie star.

All green text aside though, I agree that this was the way, if any, to play our good friend Dave
>>
>>7518879
Was DFW a big guy?
>>
>>7518983
For you.
>>
>>7518983
For you
>>
>>7518989
>>7518990
But actually though
>>
There was something terribly sad and banal about it
>>
>>7518775
I had read IJ and watched his interviews before I saw this which made it pretty boring.
>>
It tried to make DFW look loveable and folksy and what's up with the whole "Don't touch muh girl" plot for all the airheads, the movie was only made to cash in on bros finding about infinite jest who needed a lame romance plot to be entertained.
>>
>>7519069
delete this...
>>
>>7518890

he mentions that he doesn't really get laid from his book, but that he would probably be sad if he did, because the women would be fucking him for his art and not for his personality or w/e
>>
>>7519069
DELETE THIS
>>
>>7518895

I'm interested in this too. I've never read any BEE but I've been angry at the cunt since he called Alice Munro overrated.

>>
>>7518894
this actually sums it up very well

DFW had the life of an artist. He understood all his shortcomings and was still able to produce something of value, regardless of what /lit/ thinks. I don't think the movie made him out as the best guy ever but he feels like a real person. He knows that underneath everything he's still a fraud, but he's not unique in that. It's a human trait.

He bandanna too big for he godam head

worst new meme of 2015
>>
what kind of music did dfw like, senpai?
>>
>>7518869
They were in the airport leaving whatever town DFW lived in so they could finish the book tour, and it was snowing during that part of the movie.
>>
Who would have been a better choice to play Wallace in the movie?
>>
>>7519012
I smirked. I feel ashamed.
>>
>>7520849
Even on 4chan, people didn't used to say "meme" as often as they do these days. It's pretty annoying. Fucking kids.
>>
For me it didn't come off like the film was worshipping DFW, it did pretty well in portraying his autism, especially regarding women.
>>
>>7518775
I feel that the film portrayed both characters very negatively, and is better for that. Wallace appears in the middle to be a sniveling brat and a phony on the same scale as his novel, and set against him is the spineless Lipsky, whose hero-worship tints the camera's lens rosy, accounting for the ostensibly positive note with which it ends vis-a-vis Wallace. We can't ignore the presence of the director in this movieā€”the decision to have Lipsky as our eyes to the world is crucial to understanding why the morality of the film overlooks Wallace's autism by the end.

Can you explain how he's fraudulent? I have IJ sitting on my desk, but I feel like I'm simply not ready to start it yet

well done senpai

That's when I deleted the film and stopped seeding the torrent.

You can read the story, 'Good Old Neon', to understand that bit about fraudulence. Some people claim that it's not, but it is fairly autobiographical.

It's also a good pre-read for IJ, combined with general read on postmodernism & why DFW was really right to condemn it, and obviouslyAwareness of IJ wiki existing

IF I TAKE OFF THAT BANDANNA WILL YOU DIE?

nah it was really not fair at all to dfw, not even in the sense that he didn't have flaws in real life but it just came off as a weak charicature. watch the famouse charlie rose interview for a actually quite in depth insight into what he would have been like in person to actually be around.

tldr: a glib facsimile

Watching it now.
Poor QT, his suffering is so obvious. ;_;
I just want to comfort him and bring him his favorite bandanna warm from the dryer

That interview is fraudulent, he is pretending to be a sperg to create a 'legend' around himself.

Do you have an example of him "out of character?"

I like that other interview with that German chick more. The one that all those goofy face shots come from.

I live in a place that gets below -30 and all I wear during that is a t-shirt under a sweater, with a thin jacket overtop. He's way overdressed.
