Anyone else remember the "forgotten" meme trilogy? Before Joyce, dfw, and Pynchon?
>>

>meme

You don't even know what the fuck that means.
>>
>>7513482
It truly is the forgotten trilogy.
>>
I actually really like the new one with Gaddis and etc, it's much more accesible than the old one and we should get new people joining /lit. becuase of it. It'd stop people thinking we're so pretentious and snobby as well, so we'd get even more new browsers.
>>
>>7513545
It sucks and no one feels strongly either way about those authors.

Also, I've been here since the start and I don't remember any "forgotten meme trilogy". Is this a joke or more newfag revisionism?

How in the fuck would anyone translate Joyce?
>>
>>7513743
just run it through google translator
Translators usually use this route:
english to bulgarian
bulgarian to chinese
chinese to whatever language they're translating it to
Some starry-eyed amateurs on /lit/ used the same process when writing their piece "legacy of David Faster Stranger in a beach""

There are actually two different Finnish translations of Ulysses :^)

Better question is, how in the fuck would anyone translate DFW? Joyce isn't that hard.
>>
>>7513982
Bueeeeeena la rata hahahaha
Bien que haya colombianos por acá ome.
>>
>>7517340
>Joyce isn't that hard.

whatever you say, kiddo
>>
>>7517622
To translate, compared to DFW for instance. It's obviously still hard but he's less idiomatic and filled with ridiculous abbreviations, not to mention the syntax.

There are really impressive translations of Ulysses out there while all the existing translations of DFW are really underperforming due to Wallace's english.

But nice ebin ad hominem born by your lack of knowledge bro.
>>
>>7517650
You're underestimating Joyce, hugely. But that's fine.
>>
>>7517665
I've read Joyce both in translation and in english.

Have you?
>>
>>7517673
>>7517673
>Gifford points out the the first letters of each of the novel’s three sections (S-M-P) could represent the initials of the three main characters (Stephen, Molly, and Poldy), or perhaps the three parts of a syllogism (Subject, Middle, and Predicate), thus “suggest[ing] a logical and narrative structure, which the reader can grasp but of which the characters in the fiction are essentially unaware.”

Did the translation you were reading have the letters "S," "M," and "P" at the beginning of the three sections? There are no doubt many other countless details Joyce included in his works that any translation would completely miss.
>>
>>7517686
I believe so, but I knew that after reading the original.

And no translations both starts and ends with 'yes', like hell, that ruins the whole book right.

These 'countless details' are seriously minor to the entire work, most people who give sermons about them are those who got nothing out of the plot and only spotted what the initial layer has to offer.
>>
>>7517693
I meant 'no translation both starts and ends with the letter S', in case it's not obvious.

>>7517693
If the details don't matter then you might as well just not even call it a translation.
>>
>>7517718
I didn't say that, I said that the details are minor

And not only in translations, they're very minor addition even in the original work. A book doesn't get more literary merit simply because of some gimmick, even if it worked this way in modernism.

Is this image supposed to be equal to saying 'I was b8ing you the whole time'?

Because Bloom would rather agree with me here.
>>
>>7517334
There's no need to make it, it already exists, I've seen it
>>
>>7517735
How would I be "b8ing" you? I was saying a translation of Ulysses is inherently inferior. You're trying to argue that the painstaking detail Joyce infused into his work is a "gimmick" and that you can read his work without it, and my argument is you are NOT reading Ulysses. You're reading a bastardization of a brilliant work, and something completely different. Sorry, famiglia, but it's true. Might as well just Sparknotes the book.
>>
>>7517752
>How would I be "b8ing" you?
well you posted a random meme image instead of an actual statement.
>You're trying to argue that the painstaking detail Joyce infused into his work is a "gimmick" and that you can read his work without it
You dumbed it down a little, but long story short, yes, 'gimmick' is an appropriate name for such details.
>Might as well just Sparknotes the book.
You can't be serious. Jesus Christ.

Bear in mind that it all started off with my belief(which is still the case) that Joyce is just easier to translate than DFW.

The worst you can do with DFW is not have an equivalent idiom. The worst you can do with Joyce is miss an entire conceptual idea.
>>
>>7517838
Citation needed family, the idioms and abbvs in DFW's stuff aren't just random mashed up stuff, they are just as conceptual in the very postmodern way, but that allows just as much to be missed.
