I asked my Classical Civ professor what they thought of this series. She surprised me by saying that she had enjoyed it, and also thought that it was great that it was getting modern kids into mythology. It would only become a problem, she said, if people started trying to use it as a substitute for the source material rather than as an introduction to it.
TL;DR yeah it's cheesy YA escapism, but that doesn't mean it's worthless.
