What's the literary equivalent of John Darnielle/The Mountain Goats? Besides John Darnielle ofcourse.
By that I mean, what writers have solidly constructed, consistent, well written output with lots of pathos and a diehard fanbase?

OP is asking for the book equivalent Darnielle's songwriting; if his writing isn't as good as his songwriting (or doesn't have the same style/themes) it's not what the comparison to other authors should be based on.
My ex-girlfriend loved The Mountain Goats.
I was instantly wary of them.
Later I found out I was correct to be wary of them, because they are for hipsters and teenage girls. My initial guess was correct.
