I honestly thought that Helen dying was lazy writing on Tolstoy's part. Killing off a character when they become inconvenient is pretty bad, there was a bunch of lead-in to Helen trying to finagle a divorce and then she just drops dead right in time for Pierre to hit it off with Natasha.
