It's a social construction that can only be properly understood as a relation to the material processes of production, that is to say the making and distributing of foodstuff and other material necessities, "necessities" itself being defined by the same processes as it forms, as well as the luxury items which are used as bargaining tools to acquire these in societies in which some people do not themselves take part in this production, and reproduction, that is to say the making and maintenance of offspring as well as the social codes necessary to bring the, in western societies two, "two" itself being defined by the same processes as it forms, sexes together intimately enough for one to be inserted in to the other and, so to speak, splooge halves of genetic blueprint, in a given society, as well as the ideological dialectal struggle between class interests over how words are defined, in which the ruling classes will have more power to shape development of linguistic conventions, but the lower classes still having a democratic, the word is used postironically, possibility of choosing other, to them more politically, "aesthetically" is, by the way, included in the meaning of the word 'politically', more appealing interpretations, making the ruling classes ever vigilant, and gives them and, by extension, society, an inherently paranoid nature, turning the sofar relatively very straightforward process of definition in to a game where the rules must forever be questioned and, even, denied to exist, using themselves, the meaningless of which is essential to the process.
