De gustibus non est disputandum.

2000 years later people still argue about what people like and why.

Reminder that Artists create the Canon and not Critics.

Reminder that the study of Culture is analogous to Botany.

>the study of Culture is analogous to Botany

Go on.
>>
>>7440853
Just ask someone who actually makes art how much they respect critics or connoisseurs.
>>
>>7440853
Take author(1). Who was his major influence?
Authors(2). His influence?
Authors(3). Repeat.

It's called Tradition. You follow the branches back in time.

Folklore/Myth is the seed.
>>
>>7440865
Are you saying botany is not respected?
>>
>>7440882
Popular = good is just a fallacious appeal to authority, especially when you're so subjective and arbitrary in its application.

I don't know why anybody thinks it's somehow more logically valid in the arts than anywhere else.

Your argument is retarded. Your strawman is retarded. You do not understand what the Canon means.
>>
>>7440910
Cultural exaltation doesn't prove or demonstrate quality either. It's still just an assertion.
>>
>>7440931
No, it is an objective linking chronologically between works that have continual influence.

Artists make the canon.
Artists make the canon.
Say it with me, and abandon your sophistry.

Yeah, totally, you can just assert whatever you want. I mean, logic is just a social construct anyway, right?

>>7440940
Even if that were true. (which it's not) influence is difficult enough to quantify that it might as well be useless, and STILL doesn't demonstrate any kind of objective quality anyway.
>>
>Gene Wolfe will die in your lifetime.
>>
>>7441011
Milton was influenced by Dante.
Dante was influenced by Virgil.
Virgil was influenced by Homer.

Wow, that was really hard to quantify.

You're just wanking off with words. You have no point at all.
>>
>>7441018
Not if you die first or kill yourself beforehand. :)
>>
>>7441036
Right, because every single instance is as clear and easy to demonstrate as that one. The Canterbury Tales, for example is a firmly established part of the canon, and there's massive debate surrounding its influence.

I'm just trying to get you to acknowledge that the canon doesn't demonstrate quality, and that quality is an antiquated, essentially useless concept.
>>
>>7440812
canonical literature has had centuries of ever-evolving scholarly criticism and interpretation, which also means the texts that were painfully obscure in their own time can have a second wind in the canon itself. Canonical does not equate to popularity, and it certainly doesn't defend the quality of a text. rather it attempts to trace a literary genealogy of sorts, in order to make sense of the intertextual nature of the canon and NOT to form an arbitrary divide between good (canon) and bad (non-canon).
