Why is English literature so fusty and gay

Middlemarch is supposedly the best British novel.
However, the question stands:
What the fuck is Middlemarch?

Its on Gutenberg for free, find out.
Also, Remains of the Day should be more popular here, its basically feels guy as unreliable narrator.
I've read most of Middlemarch and yeah it's pretty great. Mostly because it did a lot of novel things first.
English literature looks kind of sad all by itself, doesn't it.

Sure, she's dropped off recently (NW was trash and shouldn't be on the list) but her debut was solid and showed great promise, shame really.

Because Britain's heyday was over a century ago.
