Hello /lit/ I need your help. I have to read and compare two books and write a 4-6 page essay on them for an English class. My friend recommended The Stranger by Alfred Camus.
Is this a good idea?
What book should I compare it to?
I was thinking of either Kafka, The Crying of Lot 49 by Pynchon or Samuel Beckett, is that a good way to go?
If not what books would you recommend?
Would all these books go over my head?

That would be pretty easy actually, the hard part would be reading two incredibly long books in such a short period of time. But with those 2 books this is probably the easiest topic to write about...
OP, compare (contrast) The Stranger to Crime and Punishment. Simple
Compare it to the Casey Anthony trial. Seriously. She was put on trial for being an Applebees party slut/ bad mom in eyes of the American public. 1st degree murder?? Certainly manslaughter. Anyway. Closest thing to a real life version of The Stranger I've ever seen.

It's a pretty good private high school, about 12 people or so in my class and my teacher is a pretty harsh grader.
I've read To Kill a Mockingbird and I don't think there's a ton to compare other than some similarities in plot. The writing style and movement are pretty different but it may give me something to compare.
I've read The Wind Up Bird Chronicle and two other Murakami novels and I'd honestly have no idea how to analyze them.

Oh yeah, just to be clear, I have quite a bit of time to read them. As in like months time. She gave us a lot of time in advance for this. Doesn't mean I really want to read a 500+ page book for it.

They're so similar in the sense that they both have a fucking trial in them and that Camus and Kafka share a very similar philosophical style.

I want to give you some better advice on 2d thought since I do have a BA in lit (Spanish lit but still nice to share my non-wealth of literary knowledge).
A fun comparison would be with James M Cains The Postman Always Rings Twice. Has one of American lit's sexiest female characters ("Rip me!!") and Camus said he used it as a model for The Stranger. All round awesome book and you could take it in many directions.

The Stranger is great and short, I'd recommend.
Crying Lot of 49 is a tough one if you're new to Pynchon, it's good too though. Inherent Vice is beginners Pynchon, so I've heard.
