Like most people here you probably won't see past the sci-fi/fantasy aspects, and this, dear boy, is when your career as a plebeian is marked.

The book has social/political/religious themes. Or it has pew-pew.

Great book. The start is a little slow but builds up the lore well enough, there's some dog shit bits with the hunter seeker and gom jabbar and the box of magical wank.

Greats great once the niggas start pounding through the Dune sands and meeting sweet tribal justice with the Freman.

The end is shit tier like the author got bored and wrapped the whole epic tale up with 50 pages when really it needed to be expanded and made more interesting.

Overall it shits on most sci fi / fantasy. Epic.
>>
>>7413308
why is it written Iran on the spaceship? Why do political cartoonists feel the need to tag everything?
>>
>>7413382
I think it's a Murrican thing- you don't generally see it on British cartoons. Not sure how it started, but it does kind of give the impression that the readers are idiots.

>>
>>7413714
when I was a teen I went into it only for the pew pew, but I got the other themes, however I see how it could be missed by some. I've seen god awful reviews on youtube on how boring it was because of its political and religious themes and not enough battles and aliens.
>>
>>7413226
The first book should have been a whole series. The events and characters in the ending don't get nearly the gravity and detail they're due--very important figures and institutions get 0 backstory and are just shuttled in and shuttled off with some barebones drama.

So, it starts out strong and keeps that strength through the midpoint, but may leave you feeling unsatisfied by the end.

If you're getting into it because people hyped up the world building or allegory and subtext then prepare to be fucking disappointed. It's a fun adventure novel, that's about it.

Does anyone have this version of the book?

If so, is it of good quality? I've got the paperback one in this >>7413556 picture, and wanted to get a good hardcover edition.
>>
>>7416399
I've owned the paperback (gave it away as a gift) and also own the one you just posted. Decent quality, definitely one of the nicest b&n leatherbound classics out there. Folio society has a beautiful edition which I think just came out, but iirc it's like $80, possibly even $150ish.
>>
>>7416683
Thanks.

Have you owned other B&N Leatherbound classics? I've ordered the Arabian Nights and Count of Monte Cristo from the website, though they haven't arrived yet, and was wondering how the quality would be on those.

Yeah, just looked at the Folio Society one, looks really nice but it's $150 AUD, definitely not cheap for me. Especially for just one book.
>>
>>7414221
it would be if it had the power to do so
>>
>>7416690

from reviews i read the translations and editing are often shoddy and poor for B&N translations, but if you're a casual reader they're nice and make for cute gifts

: )

First book is a 5/10 scifi adventure with interesting theme
Next three books are very wordy explorations on some aspects of long-term politics and retarded assassination plots, ok if you are into that kind of stuff
Book 5+6 are muh clones, don't bother with them
>>
>>7413308
You would have had to read the book to get those references. If I didn't read it, I never would have guessed.

If something is ruined by you knowing what's going to happen then it wasn't very good in the first place. The events and presentation should be exciting on its own.

This will probably get ignored because I'm asking a lot of you, but the latest War Nerd podcast spent a loooong time talking about the 60's in San Francisco when this book was written, and how him, PKD, and a bunch of other sci fi writers spent a huge amount of time doing meth and writing a shitton and basically be the best writers of all time. You should listen to it, but again, I get that I'm asking a lot of you.

https://www.patreon.com/posts/3788080

A lot of it is about how those sci fi writers were the opposite of dude's like Norman Mailer and people who get published in the New Yorker, who wrote highly regarded stuffy but altogether unreadbly boring shit. Nobody respected the sci fi writers, but they wrote so much (hundreds of stories and dozens of novels each) that they could handle taking speed while writing, which meant they're writing was crazy as a speed bender but still coherent, which is a miracle in itself.

Good luck and enjoy it
