There are several books that I respect, whose technical achievements I recognize and acknowledge, but they don't have that spark that makes me love them. In those cases I give the book a lower rating because what I want is to enjoy books. (But the rating is never too low, since it still is an undeniably good book.)

The example I had in mind was Walden by thoreau. By the time I had finally gotten around to reading it, I was already familiar with his ideas and criticisms of society because his influence had percolated its way through culture and art that I consumed. So when I read it, it seemed a bit trite and predictable, but I recognize that's only because it's had such a huge influence.
