What's even more fun is to buy and give out cans of red bull to a group of 60 lbs children and watch them play zombie levels of call of duty and death matches. as this appears to be a thread of people who write, and that, that writing is likely to be of a fancifully fictional nature, I gots a qestion.
When you are trying to write some fiction completely de novo, in what order do you create the characters, plot, setting? I like to think that if you come up with some interesting characters that the plot will kind of make itself in a sense and the setting forms around it, on the other hand I have a BS in biology and have always sucked in English and literature related classes.
On a slightly related note, to what length do you justify your magic / super advanced technology? Do you just do a complete hand wave, and say "it works cause I'm the writer and the characters can just do whatever I want them to do at a given moment", or do you try to come up with a system of rules and justifications that your characters have to work within when you want them to do things?

Ok, but to make my question more specific, do you have a process that your mages must follow to perform feat X so that its not a deus ex machina when your character performs some amazing feat, and you don't have a reader asking themselves why your character can't just spirit bomb on any asshole walking down the street who gives them a funny look?
Do the moons and stars have to be in proper alignment? Do they need to draw power from leylines? summon deamons? perform a river dance to gain the gods favor?

They're using guns and grenades and shit but each use of the abilities is respectively as tiring as doing 20 squat thrusts.(I guess) you can't do it all day and the more you train and meditate the stronger your stamina. I started writing the first book of my series in that house on Cambridge while I was working at sylvania. My dad lives around the corner on south hill rd.
