I first read Houellebecq recently and I chose "Whatever" because I'm also a 30 year old programmer and the protagonist was highly relatable. It was the best piece of modern fiction I've read in a long time and restored a little bit of my faith in contemporary novels. I've heard that the other books are better, so I'm looking forward to reading them too.

Whatever is such a good book. It's years of study and intense, sincere convictions compacted into 32k words. He struggled to get it published but finally someone accepted. Houellebecq is by far my favorite living writer.

Platform was my point of departure (casually so), but looking back at my experiences with Houellebecq I find it to be his dullest effort.
