I identify as queer, but my friend who studied gender whatever in college says that it's more for people who don't pass as hetero-cis and that maybe I should Use bi. What're the politics of the term queer?

Queer is just an umbrella term that could mean literally anything different from a binary hetero cis person. I honestly don't like umbrella terms though.

"Queer" can mean gay, bisexual or trans so it is the ultimate umbrella term for lgbt, but it is also sometimes used by "nonbinary" people and the like (special snowflakes)
